Wheat rust expert Bob McIntosh, of the Plant Breeding Institute, University of Sydney, Australia, examining rust symptoms on a wheat line in the field at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute's (KARI) Njoro research station in Kenya. More than 30,000 wheat lines are now being screened each year. This virulent new strain of the disease, which emerged in Uganda in 1999, is already endemic in the area, making it possible to use Njoro as a testing ground for wheats from many different partner countries all over the world. Njoro is home to an ongoing screening program, working in close partnership with CIMMYT to identify sources of resistance to the Ug99 race of stem rust.

It was jointly organized by CIMMYT, the Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat Project, KARI, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The course was attended by scientists from over 20 countries, many of whom are collaborators with the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI). This was part of a two-week international training course on “Stem Rust Note Taking and Evaluation of Germplasm” hosted by KARI at Njoro from 28 September to 7 October 2009. Teaching the students here is Matthew Rouse, a PhD student at the University of Minnesota, working with the USDA.

However it is time consuming and labor intensive it would not be practical for a large number of accessions, but might be used to ensure infection in inoculation rows, for example. This method ensures that spores enter the leaves, and unlike spraying does not depend on dew formation, so can be carried out even in drier weather.

The demonstration was part of a two-week international training course on “Stem Rust Note Taking and Evaluation of Germplasm” hosted by KARI at Njoro from 28 September to 7 October 2009. Here, rather than stored spores, fresh pieces of infected plant stems are used to create the inoculum, a practical and easy method if inoculation is being carried out immediately.
